the art of..... happiness {el arte de..... la felicidad}

Okay, so these things we constantly hear, and know, and even do. But do we let them become routine? Or do we let them slowly fade away? I know I did. and thats when your happiness begins to disappear. I know very few divine truths about happiness, but thats because it is actually very simple.  

1. Be grateful. 

2. Stop thinking about yourself.

A dear and cherished young friend, Wendy Bennion of Salt Lake City, was such an example. Just the day before yesterday, she quietly departed mortality and returned “to that God who gave [her] life” (Alma 40:11). She had struggled for over five long years in her battle with cancer. Ever cheerful, always reaching out to help others, never losing faith, her contagious smile attracted others to her as a magnet attracts metal shavings. While ill and in pain, a friend of hers, feeling downcast with her own situation, visited Wendy. Nancy, Wendy’s mother, knowing Wendy was in extreme pain, felt that perhaps the friend had stayed too long. She asked Wendy, after the friend had left, why she had allowed her to stay so long when she herself was in so much pain. Wendy’s response: “What I was doing for my friend was a lot more important than the pain I was having. If I can help her, then the pain is worth it.” Her attitude was reminiscent of Him who bore the sorrows of the world, who patiently suffered excruciating pain and disappointment, but who, with silent step of His sandaled feet, passed by a man who was blind from birth, restoring his sight. He approached the grieving widow of Nain and raised her son from the dead. He trudged up Calvary’s steep slope, carrying His own cruel cross, undistracted by the constant jeers and taunting that accompanied His every step. For He had an appointment with divine destiny. In a very real way He visits us, each one, with His teachings. He brings cheer and inspires goodness. He gave His precious life that the grave would be deprived of its victory, that death would lose its sting, that life eternal would be our gift. 

3. Get out, and go serve.

OK, entonces, estas cosas escuchamos constantemente, and las sabemos, and aun las hacemos. Pero, dejamos que se hacen rutina? O dejamos que lentamente se desaparecen? Se que así hice yo. Y cuando esa pasa, la felicidad empieza desaparecer. Yo se muy pocos verdades divinas acerca de la felicidad, y esto es por que de hecho, es muy simple.

1. Se agradecido.

2. Deja de pensar en ti.

{La Paciencia-Una Virtud Celestial, Thomas S. Monson, 1995} Un ejemplo de ello es mi querida y preciada joven amiga, Wendy Bennion, de Salt Lake City. Hace apenas dos días, ella partió de este mundo y se fue “de regreso a ese Dios que [le] dio la vida” (Alma 40: ; había luchado mas de cinco años en su batalla con el cáncer. Siempre alegre, siempre tratando de ayudar a otros, fuerte en la fe, su sonrisa contagiosa atraía a otras personas como un imán atrae las piezas de metal. Un día en que no se sentía bien y tenía mucho dolor, fue a visitarla una de sus amigas, que estaba abatida por sus propios problemas. Nancy, la madre de Wendy, sabiendo que su hija estaba con fuertes dolores, pensó que quizá la amiga había permanecido mas tiempo del que a la enferma le convenía. Después que esta se fue, le preguntó a Wendy por que le había permitido quedarse todo ese tiempo cuando ella misma estaba sufriendo tanto. La joven le respondió: “Lo que hice por mi amiga es mucho mas importante que el dolor que yo sentía. Si con eso la ayudo, entonces el dolor vale la pena”. La actitud de Wendy me hace recordar de Jesús, que cargó los dolores del mundo, que pacientemente sufrió terrible dolor y desilusión, pero que, al pasar con su paso silencioso al lado de un hombre que era ciego de nacimiento, le restauró la vista; se acercó a la dolorida viuda de Nain y levanto a su hijo de entre los muertos; subió penosamente la empinada cuesta del Calvario, cargando su propia cruz inhumana, sin prestar atención a las constantes burlas e injurias que le acompañaban en cada paso. Porque El tenía que cumplir Su destino divino. Y de una manera muy real El nos visita, a cada uno, con Sus enseñanzas; nos da animo y nos inspira bondad. El dio Su preciosa vida para impedirle al sepulcro su victoria, para que la muerte perdiera su aguijón, para que tuviéramos el don de la vida eterna.

3. Sal, y ve a servir.
